Pop Goes the Weasel (Helen Grace #2) by M.L. Arlidge

Published September 11, 2014 by Penguin Books (UK)

DI Helen Grace returns in Pop Goes the Weasel, the electrifying new thriller from M. J. Arlidge.

The body of a middle-aged man is discovered in Southampton's red-light district - horrifically mutilated, with his heart removed.

Hours later - and barely cold - the heart arrives with his wife and children by courier.

A pattern emerges when another male victim is found dead and eviscerated, his heart delivered soon afterwards.

The media call it Jack the Ripper in reverse; revenge against the men who lead sordid double lives visiting prostitutes. For Grace, only one thing is certain: there's a vicious serial-killer at large who must be halted at all costs . . .

My Thoughts…

Pop Goes the Weasel is the second book in this amazing crime series.    I loved Eeny Meeny, the first book, and could not wait to read the next chapter in Helen Grace’s adventures.    When reading in a series you never know what to expect after the first book.    This book kept up to the high standards set in book one.   The characters were consistent.    The storyline was just as enthralling.

Helen Grace is moving past the history that as dug up in Eeny Meeny, focusing on the job at hand and finding the next bad guy.      There is still history that she is dealing with.  Including the saving of another family member that is taking a walk down the wrong path.     I enjoyed that as a reader I was able to keep getting glimpses into Helen’s past and learn more about what makes her be the person that she is and act the way she does.

The killer in this book is unexpected.     I don’t usually feel sorry for the bad guy but in Pop Goes the Weasel I do.    The killer in this book truly turned out the way they did due to the circumstances of her upbringing.      That is not to say that there is an excuse for the fact that they became a killer.    The history of the killer explains so much.   The thought process, the behavior, the reactions, and the life they chose to live was not really of their choice, it was of necessity.

The Helen Grace Series by M.L. Arlidge is a series I recommend checking out if you enjoy a good crime drama, murder mystery book.    I am anxiously awaiting The Doll’s House, the next book in this series.

Praise for M.J. Arlidge’s EENY MEENY:
“Boy, do the pages fly by…It's almost always cause for skepticism when a book's jacket copy promises an ingenious new variety of serial killer, but amazingly enough it's true of M.J. Arlidge's gripping debut.”
