The Taste of Air by Gail Cleare

Paperback, 250 pages
Published October 2016 by Red Adept Publishing, LLC
A simple phone call disrupts Nell Williams’s well-ordered life. Her mother, Mary, is in a hospital in Vermont. But her mother is supposed to be safely tucked away in an assisted-living facility in Massachusetts, so Nell can’t fathom why she would be so far from home.

After notifying her sister, Bridget, Nell hops on a plane and rushes to her mother’s side. There, she discovers that her mother has been living a second life. Mary has another home and a set of complex relationships with people her daughters have never met.

When Nell and Bridget delve deeper into their mother’s lakeside hideaway, they uncover a vault of family secrets and the gateway to change for all three women.

My Thoughts…

A mother, Mary Reilly, is living a life full of secrets.   Two daughters, Nell and Bridget, are thrown into this puzzling, secret life without any warnings and are forced to discover the cause for the secrets.        Then throw in the neighbor Jake, his wife Ginnie, and their son Adam and the secrets just keep coming.

The Taste of Air is so unique.     The story of the Vietnam war and all the horrors that go along with war set up the meetings of Mary and Thomas, her husband.  From there the story gets better and better.     The choices that Mary makes from the very beginning only affect her.   I enjoyed being able to see the history that goes along with these life changing choices.  It was nice to see her logic and what was happening in the world that would cause her to start a secret life away from the husband and children that were so obviously her entire world.

As a daughter myself I was invested in Nell and Bridget.      While Mary’s life is the main story, Nell and Bridget are going through their own struggles personally and I wanted them to find their own happiness.    I liked the support, understanding, and unwavering love that I felt between them.   They were sisters, it didn’t matter what else was going on, and they had each other’s backs no matter what.    I also enjoyed that they pushed each other to be happy.  They certainly wanted what was best for each other and were not shy in telling their thoughts and feelings.

A Taste of Air is an eye opening book.   Not all things are as they appear yet a true family will stick together and work through any surprises.    I recommend picking up your own copy.
