Once in a Lifetime by Kathryn R. Biel

Kindle Edition
Expected publication: September 5th 2017 by Kathryn R. Biel

Ten years ago, the Sassy Cats were at the top of the charts until Callie Smalls walked away to pursue her career in fashion and television. The other four members—Angie, Tabitha, Mandy, and Daphne—were left to fend for themselves and continue on with their lives.

That is, until the day when Callie decides to book a gig for the group at a major music festival, without talking to her former band mates. Scattered across the country, at different points in life, can they rekindle the magic in the music?

A soccer mom whose husband doesn't know about her past. A fading star, sacrificing all to stay in the spotlight just one second more. A party girl, challenged with her most important role yet. A tiger mom, fighting for her son. A desperate woman, unhappy and alone.

A lot can change in the course of a decade. Will it be harmony or hatred for the Sassy Cats?

My Thoughts…

Once in a Lifetime is an interesting look at how being famous can change your outlook on life.    The 5 Sassy Cats were all young when they were touring and living the famous life.   Now they are grown up with families, lives, and careers that do not include singing or performing.   I thought it was very interesting to see how different their lives have become and how when they come together they have to work hard to get what they want.

I loved that each chapter had the points of views of all 5 ladies.   Each Sassy Cat had her own perception of what was happening due to the circumstances of her life.  Yet, together they were going to make it work.  I could feel that each lady wants to be successful, that each lady was searching for what their future would hold, and that each lady wanted to find that fun, easy, friendship that was once there.

Kathryn Biel is talented in her writing.   Her characters are realistic and easy to relate to, the storyline always pulls me in, and I am always thrilled when she releases a new book.    I would recommend picking up your own copy of Once in a Lifetime and enjoying a fun story about 5 ladies who use to be best friends coming back together to find their futures.

Thank you Kathryn Biel for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Fool Me Once by Catherine Bybee

  • Genre:
    Contemporary Romance
  • Release Date:
    September 19th, 2017
  • Paperback ISBN:9781612185071
  • Kindle ASIN: B06WP9PSWV
  • Series:
    First Wives

    Book #1

Cynical divorce attorney Lori Cumberland lives by one motto: Love is grand, but divorce is a hundred grand. With one failed marriage under her own personal belt, Lori had fallen hard and early—and it isn’t something she plans on repeating. She’s content focusing on the temporary marriages of her rich and famous clients. When she joins some of her recent divorcées on a celebratory cruise, her only vow is fun, sun, and new friends. But Lori finds herself tempted by a jury of one.

For Reed Barlow, falling into the world of private investigation was easy. He knows the law and knows how to avoid breaking it—all while doing his job. His rule to live by? No emotion, no involvement…until Lori. His charming smile and cocky attitude distracts Lori and lowers her guard, which is exactly what Reed desires.

But what appears as a one-time-only flirtation may be a plot orchestrated by Reed. As he’s taking his investigation to a dangerous level, it’s Lori who could end up in jeopardy. Reed has only one shot for Lori to grant him a second chance. But if he comes clean with her, he blows his cover. And that just might cost him the opportunity for an alliance of family…and of love.

My Thoughts…

I love when an author starts a new series and you find old friends within the pages.     Fool Me Once revolves around Alliance, a service that sets up arranged temporary marriages.    Alliance has been found in past series written by Catherine Bybee.    This series starts with three temporary wives that are trying to come to terms with their divorces and find their own happiness.

This book is Lori’s story.   Lori is the lawyer who writes the pre-nups for   the temporary marriages.   While on a cruise where Lori is playing mother to her group of divorcees she meets Reed.    The relationship continues after the cruise and some secrets come out that could put their relationship into trouble.

I love the setting, the characters, and the story.  Once I started I could not put it down.     When I did put it down I continued to look for a few minutes here and there to pick it up and read a few more pages.     There is romance, secrets, sex, and fun everything I love in a book.

I recommend picking up your own copy and enjoying meeting Lori and the girls in the first book of the First Wives Series.

Catch My Fall: A Falling Novel (Falling #4) by Jessica Scott

ebook, 250 pages
Expected publication: September 18th 2017 by Jessica Scott

Former Army Sergeant Deacon Hunter is trapped.

Trapped in the friend zone. Longing for the woman who captured his heart when they were deployed in Iraq.

Former Army Sergeant Kelsey Ryder has scars, the kind of scars she hopes that no one ever sees. Working around the guys at the Pint, she’s reminded of everything she lost when she left the Army behind.

But some scars refuse to stay hidden.

One fateful night changes everything and neither of them know if their relationship will ever be the same.

All Deacon knows is that he’ll be there to catch her when she finally falls.

My Thoughts…

Jessica Scott has a talent for writing military books that give non-military people a glimpse into what happens during times of battle, times of being home, and how life is different for the military.  With every book that comes out I become excited to get my hands on her book and find out what I am going to learn about a life that I don’t know very much about.

With Catch My Fall the reader catches up with Deacon Hunter and Kelsey Ryder.    They had a relationship in Iraq and came home to a different life.   I found that both characters were so wrapped up in their own problems in adjusting to not being in Iraq that they lose what they mean to each other.     Yet, their attraction is there.   There is no doubt that what is between them has not disappeared since they returned stateside.   Now they just have to find a way to adjust to their new lives and a way to come back together.

I was pulled into Catch My Fall from the very first chapter and found myself losing myself in the story.     I’d sit down to read a chapter and find myself reading 3 or 4, losing track of time and all around me.    Catch My Fall is a book that I’d love to have my book club read and have a good discussion about.

Thank you Jessica Scott for giving me a copy of your book in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt

Prologue

What’s in a name?
Usually, parents name their children with a special kind of love in their hearts. Not mine though. They didn’t want me, or at least, that’s what they kept telling me. They only ever wanted to inflict pain. I was nobody until the woman next door gave me the lovely name Elenore. She cared for me when my own parents didn’t or wouldn’t.
Every single day I wished to be taken away from what I endured. Anywhere would have been good. I would have sold my soul to the devil himself back then, and I’d willingly do it now. Give my living essence to breathe, to live on. My entire childhood was a survival story, and now I have another.
So much blood. Everywhere I look, there are dark pools of solidified blood stuck to the walls, the floor—my entire cell is covered. The girls who came before me are no more. Their stories are over. It was gruesome, the stuff of your nightmares.
Not me, though—he kept me.
One letter changed my destiny of certain death. It was never in me to give up easily. I’ve always been a fighter. He never saw me coming, and he never knew my strength. He was not what I expected either.
His strength.
His calmness.
Or his kindness.
He was my captor . . .

The Life We Almost Had by Laura Miller & GIVEAWAY

Genre: Small-town, second-chance romance (contemporary, new adult)
Pages: 290
Release Date: September 19, 2017

Back before everyone left the little town of Sweet Home to the ghosts, she was the girl next door. And he was the boy, who could never get on her father’s good side. But none of that mattered. The only thing that mattered was that her heart had picked him.

But that was years ago. And now, Berlin’s sister is praying for someone to show up to take her brother’s mind off the girl from his past. And surely enough, that someone does. But will this girl be able to cut the chains of his first love or will she just make him fall harder for that little girl he left behind in Sweet Home, Missouri?

One week is all they have.

My Thoughts…

Laura Miller has a way of writing.   The Life We Almost Had is a story of second chance, overcoming the odds, and following your heart.      Iva and Berlin were teenage neighbors.   From their first meeting as teenagers you could feel a connection between them.    It was interesting and entertaining seeing how they would navigate having a “friend” of the opposite sex and how long it would take them to realize what they had was definitely more than just a friendship.

I really like that there were parents in the story and they had their own little story happening but the story revolved around the teenagers.      There was guidance, grounding, yelling, silence, and love between the parents and the teenagers but the parents did not take over the story.   They were in the background just making sure that things did not get out of hand between Iva and Berlin.     This just made the story seem more realistic.

Onto the good stuff… many years after Berlin moves away and Iva loses touch with him they have a chance meeting and instantly the sparks are there again.   There was absolutely no doubt these two had to be together but how?    Berlin has a 2 year contract and Iva is headed overseas to pursue her dreams once again they are torn apart.   But true love is strong, things can change, fate can step in.

I cannot possible rave enough about this book.   As with every Laura Miller book my heart was tugged at, broken, and put back together.      I know that when I start a book from her I will not be able to put it down.    I recommend picking up your own copy ASAP.

Thank you Laura Miller for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Cursed Wolf (Curse of the Moon #5) by Stacy Claflin

A stone in the shoe is irritating. A stone around the neck is a nightmare.

Victoria should be happy. Elated. Enemies have been defeated and her new life has endless possibilities. But things never stay uncomplicated for long. Not for her. The wolf essence stone was supposed to cure wolvesof their shifting curse. Instead, it adheres itself to her, and casts a new curse on almost everyone surrounding her. Even worse, it speaks to her—leading her to a disturbing and heartbreaking realm where no one can find her and no one can follow. Each time she disappears, she returns with no memory of what transpired and is left with a feeling of dread.

Toby suffers more from the curse than the rest of his pack. The wolf essence stone seems to actively hate him and often repels him away from the love of his life. Compounding their problems? A secret society wants the stone for their own nefarious ends and the evil witch who created the curse has also resurfaced—and everything they do puts Victoria’s life in jeopardy.

All the supernaturals must band together in an epic battle for control of the stone. But before it’s over, one or more of them may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

My Thoughts…

The Curse of the Moon Series is a great paranormal story.   Cursed Wolf is book #5 in this series.    What I really love in this series is how the storyline is new in each book.   The characters are familiar, their relationships continue, and the story continues.      With each new book in this series I find myself liking or disliking the characters more and more.  I want more about their lives and to see where their story heads.

The Wolf Curse needs to be broken.    The Wolf Stone has been found, which is supposed to be able to break the curse.   The stone instead makes everyone worship Victoria.   There were times I felt like I got the point that everyone worshipped Victoria because she has possession of the stone and I wanted that story to move on.  Yet, I do understand that the worshipping part is an important part of the story.     The powers of the stone are the basis for this book.

I enjoy every book in this series and I am looking forward to more from Stacy Claflin.

Thank you Stacy Claflin for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The Keeping of Secrets by Alice Graysharp

Paperback, 330 pages
Expected publication: September 5th 2017 by Clink Street Publishing

The keeper of family secrets, Patricia Roberts grows up isolated and lonely. Trust no one and you won’t be disappointed is her motto. Three men fall in love with her and she learns to trust, only to find that their agendas are not her own. With secrets concealed from her by the ultimate love of her life, and with her own secret to keep, duplicity and deceit threaten their relationship.

In a coming of age story set against the sweeping backdrop of the Second World War - evacuation, the Battle of Britain, the Blitz, buzz bombs and secret war work - Patricia ultimately has to decide whether to reveal her deepest held secret for the sake of her future happiness.

 My Thoughts…

WWII is my era.   I love the stories of growing up in the time of the war, how families managed to live through them, how romances came to be, and how people worked to survive and support the efforts of the war    The Keeping of Secrets is that story.   It is a story of Pat being forced to leave her familiar school and go to a “safer” place to continue her learning.   It is a story of falling in love, yet knowing that you want more than just love in your life.    It is a story of second chances and learning to put the past behind you, letting go of your guilt.

This WWII story tells of living with evacuations, secret war work, and bombings.   While this time is horrific, the deaths, the heartbreak, and the sadness are all truths of the time,  I found myself pulled into the hope that Pat holds out for her future.    She is willing and happy to do what is asked of her to stay safe and to help with the war but her ultimate goal is to make herself happy.    She wants a life that does not rely on a man for happiness, she wants to finish her schooling and find a career.   All of that is not expected or accepted as a wife.   I was in awe of Pat’s strength and determination to succeed in her dreams in a time that women became wives and shortly after widows.

If you are a World War 2 fan like I am I recommend you picking up your own copy of The Keeping of Secrets by Alice Graysharp.

Thank you Rachel Gilbey for Authoright Marketing  & Publicity for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.  All thoughts are 100% my own.

THE SECRET TO SOUTHERN CHARM by Kristy Woodson Harvey COVER REVEAL

Leaving fans “practically [begging] for a sequel” (Bookpage), critically-acclaimed author Kristy Woodson Harvey returns with the second novel in her beloved Peachtree Bluff series, featuring a trio of sisters and their mother who discover a truth that will change not only the way they see themselves, but also how they fit together as a family.

After finding out her military husband is missing in action, middle sister Sloane’s world crumbles as her worst nightmare comes true. She can barely climb out of bed, much less summon the strength to be the parent her children deserve.

Her mother, Ansley, provides a much-needed respite as she puts her personal life on hold to help Sloane and her grandchildren wade through their new grief-stricken lives. But between caring for her own aging mother, her daughters, and her grandchildren, Ansley’s private worry is that secrets from her past will come to light.

But when Sloane’s sisters, Caroline and Emerson, remind Sloane that no matter what, she promised her husband she would carry on for their young sons, Sloane finds the support and courage she needs to chase her biggest dreams—and face her deepest fears. Taking a cue from her middle daughter, Ansley takes her own leap of faith and realizes that, after all this time, she might finally be able to have it all.

Harvey’s signature warmth and wit make this is a charming and poignant story of first loves, missed opportunities, and second chances that proves why she is the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand, New York Times bestselling author).

The Dating Bender by Christina Julian

 Paperback
Published August 22nd 2017 by Limitless Publishing

Here I am, on my knees in front of the Trevi Fountain, hoping like hell the legend is true. That the fountain gives you solace and love by a mere toss of a coin.

Why am I here, exactly? Let’s see…

It started with my parents telling me to get married. Of course, being the good Catholic girl I am, I did.

Needless to say, that marriage nosedived, and my parents weren’t exactly happy about it.

Newly ditched and shamefully disowned, I decided to follow the advice of Babs, a tart-of-a-mentor, who offered me a job in Colorado.

Her advice? Sex…and lots of it.

The temptation of freedom, to do whatever—whoever—I wanted was too damn strong for me to say no.

And that’s how it all started. The men, the sex, the journey…

The dating bender.

because everybody deserves a do-over.

My Thoughts…

Um… Dysfunctional relationships is the theme of this book.   Starts with Samantha marrying because her parents tell her it is the right thing to do.      Of course, that doesn’t work out as well as her parents hoped and they are quick to place the blame on Samantha.    With the failing marriage, she decides to move across the country to a new job with a crazy friend.    What could possibly go wrong?
Her story continues along in this way.

I have to say I laughed, shook my head, and just couldn’t believe someone could be this off, yet it all seemed to work in this story.    There was never a point where it went too far and I didn’t want to continue reading.     There were times I wanted to scream at Samantha to stop drinking, quit having sex with everyone, and to have more of a life than just work.   And still once Samantha decides to do something she does it, with her whole heart and puts her all into it.    I liked that about her.    I felt that eventually something has to go her way and she will find that HEA that she is obviously searching for.

Christina Julian wrote a fun and quirky debut book and I can’t wait to read more from her.     The Dating Bender is a fun, quick, and unique book that I recommend reading.

Magnolia Nights by Ashley Farley

Kindle Edition
Expected publication: September 12th 2017

From the author of the bestselling Sweeney Sister Series and Sweet Tea Tuesdays comes a new novel of passion, intrigue, and redemption.

Ellie Pringle has spent endless hours and countless dollars working with a therapist to remember the lost years of her childhood. She’s baffled and more than a little intrigued when the grandmother she hasn’t seen in thirty-four years dies and leaves her a fortune. The time has come to face her past in person. Still reeling from a recent breakup of a long-term relationship, and with nothing to keep her in San Francisco, Ellie packs her meager belongings and boards a plane for the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Standing in the entryway of her grandmother’s antebellum home on South Battery Street in Charleston, Ellie faces the first of many ghosts who will soon haunt her. On her first night in the creepy, creaking mansion, as she’s perusing the titles in a dusty bookcase, she comes across her deceased mother’s leather-bound journal. Her mother’s words create more unanswered questions and send her on a quest to find more journals. As Hurricane Irma bears down on the South Carolina coast, Ellie encounters Julian Hagood, a handsome architect who has the talent to restore her dilapidated mansion and the charm to mend her broken heart. But as Ellie reads her mother’s diaries, they dislodge a stone in the wall that safeguards her memories, causing her world to come crumbling down. Revelations about her childhood lead Ellie on a harrowing journey of discovery that will hold readers spellbound until the dramatic conclusion.

My Thoughts…

Nothing makes me fall into a book faster than it being set in a place I have never been yet the author takes such great care with the details that I feel like I have been there many times.    I find myself picturing the grand houses, hearing the charm of the southern voices, and feeling the southern heat.       Ashley Farley is amazing with her detailing.

The story in this is heart breaking.   A woman comes home to her mother after finding herself pregnant and the mother takes her in only to make her a prisoner of her house.    When she gives birth, the child becomes a prisoner also.   Then the mother dies leaving her house in Charleston to her grandchild.    There is so much more to this story but I don’t want to give away too much and ruin your experience of reading Magnolia Nights.

There is multiple points of view in alternating labeled chapters.  I really enjoyed this format.  I liked that you could see other characters perspective on the same events and how it affected their lives.    There was no confusion; each chapter was labeled so you knew exactly who was sharing their thoughts.

Ashley Farley is a talented author and I recommend picking up your own copy of Magnolia Nights ASAP.   This is a must read.

Thank you Ashley Farley and Kimberly Costa for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The Real Thing by Melissa Foster & GIVEAWAY

NEW RELEASE........
Fall in love on the shores of Sugar Lake in the small town of Sweetwater with Willow Dalton and Zane Walker.

This sassy, spirited baker is fine with heat—but is her fake fiancé too hot to handle?

Bakery owner Willow Dalton’s friendship with Zane Walker has always been a bit complicated. Now a scrumptiously hot A-list actor, Zane’s always had a reputation as player. He’s arrogant, and he’s definitely not boyfriend material. Sure, he did Willow a favor by agreeing to take her virginity before college, but is that reason enough to go along with a fake engagement a decade later—even if it comes with a real diamond ring?

Zane should have known better. Nothing involving Willow has ever been easy. Still, he knows her better than anyone, and becoming America’s hottest new leading man means cleaning up his reputation. An “engagement” to curvy, sass-mouthed Willow is the perfect PR move . . . provided no one gets hurt.

Now Zane and Willow’s little white lie has turned into an irresistible recipe for sweet temptation. And soon no one will be able to tell the difference between their fake engagement or the real thing—including them.

My Thoughts...

Friendship taken to the next level is not something new to romance stories but Zane and Willow are new to romance stories.    They have been friends forever, they have an amazing history, and a hope for a future together.   It all starts with a fake engagement just so Zane can change his playboy image.    Willow goes along knowing that she has never gotten over him.

While Zane isn’t a bad boy there are times that he has that vibe to him and he is trying so hard to be good for Willow.     The funny thing… I think Willow really likes that bad boy part of Zane she just is making him jump through some hoops to make him prove he is worthy of her heart.      Of course, Zane was willing to prove himself without any grudges to Willow just to win her trust again.

As with all of Melissa Foster’s books, the characters Zane and Willow along with their families and friends are wonderful.     They are real, true to themselves, loyal to those they love, and have the hugest hearts ever.      The relationships they have are not perfect but they are perfect for them.      They put themselves out there to show their worth and prove they are worthy of each other.

I definitely recommend picking up your own copy ASAP.   It is a must read from Melissa Foster.

I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.
