REVIEW of All The Lights by Jamie McGuire

Release Date:  May 29th, 2018

The first time Elliott Youngblood spots Catherine Calhoun, he’s just a boy with a camera, and he’s never seen a sadder and more beautiful sight. Both Elliott and Catherine feel like outcasts, yet they find an easy friendship with each other. But when Catherine needs him most, Elliott is forced to leave town.

Elliott finally returns, but he and Catherine are now different people. He’s a star high school athlete, and she spends all her free time working at her mother’s mysterious bed-and-breakfast. Catherine hasn’t forgiven Elliott for abandoning her, but he’s determined to win back her friendship…and her heart.

Just when Catherine is ready to fully trust Elliott, he becomes the prime suspect in a local tragedy. Despite the town’s growing suspicions, Catherine clings to her love for Elliott. But a devastating secret that Catherine has buried could destroy whatever chance of happiness they have left.

My Thoughts…

This is a story that starts with two teenagers who are seen as awkward and like each other.    They don’t really know how to act on that and tread very carefully with each other.     While they may not know how to act on their like of each other they do know that they can trust each other and share their secrets.    Then Elliott gets torn away at the time Catherine needs him the most.     They both don’t stop thinking about each other but being teenagers they are lost to their parent's rules.     Elliott finally returns to Catherine their senior year of high school but must work to earn her trust again.

I was entirely invested in this book.   Elliott’s persistence in earning Catherine’s friendship was wonderful.   He warmed my heart by never giving up on her yet realizing that there were times that he had to give her some space or he would lose her forever.    I like that Catherine made Elliott work to earn her back.    She wasn’t mean, she wasn’t unforgiving, she was careful with her heart.

Jamie McGuire tackled bullying, racism, peer pressure, and mental health all while keeping the story realistic.   She didn’t cover up the real world of being a teenager and showed that there is help available when needed.     This is the first book I have read by Jamie but I am excited to read more from her.

COVER REVEAL OF Eternity's Awakening by Anne Malcom

Anne Malcom is stopping by today to reveal the gorgeous cover to ETERNITY’S AWAKENING, book 3 in The Vein Chronicles! Check it out and grab the novella now!

Title: ETERNITY’S AWAKENING

Author: Anne Malcom

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Release Date: June 27th

About Eternity’s Awakening:

Heartbeats had a pesky way of complicating things. They almost always came with the nasty side effect of humanity and finally... death. Since Thorne came into my life, I'd been plagued with both. Heartbeats and humanity. Both of these things were going to be the death of me. One way or another. And the death of everyone I knew and loved, a list growing longer with every beat of my newly repaired—and irritating—heart. That pesky humanity was almost as toxic as the most debilitating illness on this hunk of rock, killing more humans than any vampire could. Love. And there I was, attached to a slayer who I couldn't be undead without. Friends who I was becoming increasingly attached to. All things—people—he would take away from me. Then he'd take me too. But if it came to that, I'd yank out my beating heart and crush it in my hands before he could touch me. It was lost anyway. If he won, my eternity would come to an end. As it happened, so would the world. That only meant I couldn't lose.

Excerpt:

I’ve gotten, over the months, very good at keeping everything in their box.
Work is work and friends are friends and fucking strangers in the bar is mostly harmless and my red phone stays home, during the first two and occasionally, when my nerves are tight or my temper is high—I’ll take the phone in public.
No one, not even Emilie or Taite know about my little part-time gig, and while I don’t think they’d care, exactly, I also didn’t want to tell them.
It was mine, a secret, and not necessarily something I was proud of—I wasn’t ashamed either, but I wanted it to be mine.
So when I step into the RCPD headquarters, I’m not RedQueen. I’m just Vivian Fitzpatrick, the perfectly put together coolly detached girl that River City expects.
“Viv,” the Chief shouts and I huff, but detour into his office, giving him the coy smile that still makes him flush.
I’ve been giving him the same smile since I was in high school and fooling around with his daughter, and he still flushes. It’s adorable, really.
“Miguel is working with our new officer, so I’m pulling Gomez off the front desk to ride with Taite.”
I smirk. “What did Gomez do to piss you off?”
He laughs.
“So you’re taking Chris?” I ask and he nods, giving me apologetic eyes.
“Sorry. Lisa will be in there with you.”
“No worries, Chief. Thanks for the heads up,” I say, grinning and he nods as I duck back out.
I get myself settled in, slipping my headset on and Emilie ducks into a grin at me.
“Have you met him yet?”
“The new guy?” I ask and she nods. “Not yet. You know people don’t like visiting my little hole in the wall.”
True enough. Taite and Emilie only come back here because they’re unreasonably attached to me.
“He’s yummy,” Emilie smirks, all dirty promise.
I arch an eyebrow. “Might I remind you that both Miguel and Cal would be unhappy to see your eye wandering.”
She flushes and I smile, pleased with myself.
“I’m looking for you, idiot,” she snaps, halfhearted.
“I don’t fuck where I work, darling. You and Taite have a lock on that particular market.”
She rolls her eyes and I shoo her away as my radio crackles to life.

REVIEW of The Surviving Girls by Katee Robert

Genre:
Romantic Suspense / Thriller
Release Date:
May 29th, 2018
Series:
Hidden Sins
Book #3
Twelve years ago, Lei Zhang and her friend Emma Nilsson miraculously lived through the notorious Sorority Row Murders that left twenty-one of their sisters dead. Still wrestling with the trauma but finally out of the limelight, Lei and Emma are now devoted to helping other victims find closure. But most disturbing for Lei—beyond the gut-wrenching survivor guilt—is that the killer was her boyfriend. He’s behind bars, but she’ll never lower her guard again.

When a copycat killer targets Lei and Emma, FBI Agent Dante Young is put in charge of anticipating the sociopath’s every move. But what he doesn’t expect is his immediate and overpowering attraction to Lei. The closer they get to each other, the more desperate and terrifying the questions become: Who wants to finish what the killer started—and why?

Now Agent Young vows to protect Lei at all costs. If they have any chance of a future together, first they have to stay alive…

My Thoughts…

Oh my… what a sick, twisted, amazing, wonderful story.    21… yes 21 sorority girls killed in one night by the boyfriend of one of the girls.     From there we learn more about the two girls who survived that night, more about the killer, and the reader feels it all come together in one thrilling book.

The killer is convicted, spending the rest of his life in prison.   The survivors are living together in a house with safe rooms, security beyond the norm, and fear every day.    I was scared for Emma and Lei.    They survived an event that they have not been able to get past, they live in constant fear of the outside world, and they only have each other.      I cannot imagine their lives but I could picture how they were living.    Their story was described in such detail that I could see their house, feel the fear, and picture how hard they were working to live a life of value.    The hope I had for them was to find happiness, find peace, and be able to step outside of their house being unafraid of the rest of the world.

The Surviving Girls is a fast pace, thriller full of twists and turns.   I was turning page after page, hoping that the end would come so I could find out what would happen while at the same time hoping the book would never end because I was so into what was going on.    There was a small romance going on and it was the perfect complement to the rest of the book.

Brenda clasped a hand to her mouth and moaned.
I couldn’t speak, couldn’t think. Instead, I pushed myself into the doorway in time to see a nurse reach towards the heart monitor. Renewed sounds of bleeps halted her hand in mid-air. Heads swivelled round. No one moved, as if waiting for the monitor to stop a second time. When it didn’t, pandemonium broke out again.
Twenty minutes later, Dr Harvey stumbled into the hallway, his ashen face covered in a sheen of sweat. “He’s stable again . . . for now.”

REVIEW of Echo Moon by Laura Spinella

When photojournalist Peter St John returns home after a two-year absence, the life he’s been running from catches up. For years his mother’s presence, coupled with Pete’s own psychic gift, has triggered visits to 1917. There, he relives battles of the Great War, captures the heyday of Coney Island on canvas, and falls in love with an enchanting and enigmatic songstress named Esme. Present-day Pete still pines for Esme, and his love endures…but so does his vivid memory of killing her.

When he discovers family heirlooms that serve as proof of his crimes, Pete will have to finally confront his former life. He also meets a young woman—who is more than what she seems—with a curious connection to his family. As century-old secrets unravel, can Pete reconcile a murder from his past before it destroys his future?

My Thoughts…

Echo Moon is the last book in the Ghost Gifts series.    I’ve read the first two and couldn’t wait to read this one.     Echo Moon finished off the series perfectly.     The attention to detail when describing Esme and her life, surrounds, and friends was so amazing that I could picture her hotel room, her friends, and even the costumes she wore when she was performing.    Pete’s life was also told in detail.   I could hear the pain in his voice when he came home to see his parents, the fear in what would happen when he closed his eyes, and the worry that he truly may have been Esme’s killer in his past life.

Many times when there are two timelines in the same story they don’t come together easily.     Laura Spinella is wonderful in her writing.   She takes the dual timelines, intertwines them together, yet never leaves the reader guessing as to when they are reading about.      I loved when Pete would show up at a place the Esme was known to have been at.

This trilogy is one of my all time favorites.     I’d definitely recommend reading all three books in order.   Start with Ghost Gifts, head right into Foretold, and finish it all out with Echo Moon.

BLURB:
Helena Eskildson is obsessed with Vikings and Norse Mythology. Neither Helena nor her sister knows they are Freya's daughters - Valkyries, the shield maidens to Odin.
When her obsession leads her to a remote site at Roskilde and it's two monolithic rune stones, her destiny is awakened.
While the team wages a battle between a cursed site and a sociopathic killer, time is ticking closer to Ragnarok.
Will her friends be able to save her before the gjallerhorn sounds?

EXCERPT:
He felt he had the favor of the Norns, the three goddesses associated with destiny, that were akin to the Greek gods of fate.
Having the favor of the gods meant success in his goals. He was destined to be Lif, the last man standing, the lone man that would repopulate the earth after Ragnarok. In essence, he would become the new Adam.
The rituals were necessary, an integral part of the process before using the key. Unfolding the linen handkerchief carefully, the ancient bronze key looked nothing like what most would think of as a key. A circular piece, about six inches in diameter spanned from his thumb to the tip of his middle finger. Runic writings along the outside edge written within the form of the great serpent Jormungand, the great dragon conquering the gripping animal grouping in a circular band about two inches wide, the design in the eternal triskell pattern. Inside of that, written in runes was the location of the gjallerhorn. At the center were nine swords pointing to an amber stone, nine strands over an open area, the stone center raised with a square notch in the back. It had to be positioned precisely at the solstice.
